Here are some important aspects to consider when planning a cycling trip in Serra da Estrela:

Popular Routes

1. Climbing to Torre: The climb to the highest point in mainland Portugal, the Tower (1993 meters), is one of the most emblematic routes. In total, there are 6 approaches, but from Seia, Covilhã or Manteigas are the most common. The climbs are challenging, with significant inclines and sharp curves, but the view from the top rewards the effort.

2. The Hug to Serra da Estrela: This route circles the mountains and passes through several picturesque villages and varied landscapes. It's a challenge of around 210km that you'll want to do together with friends.

3. Zêzere Glacier Valley Routes: Starting from Manteigas, this route takes cyclists through an impressive glacial valley, with spectacular views and a challenging climb.

4. The fearsome Adamastor: Any route that passes through the Adamastor is worthy of concern on the part of whoever plans to take it. In this section of approximately 8km, slopes of up to 15% can be a great challenge for those who travel it. Many take the opportunity to take photographs and collect drinking water from the fountain that is located practically in the middle of the route.

Despite being fearful, this place is the most desirable of all.

5. Sterrato on Nave de Santo António: Starting in the town of Unhais da Serra, the ascent to the Tower via Nave de Santo António has a very pleasant surprise for those who pass there. The Sterrato, about 2km long, on flat terrain, is often used to relax your legs and delight those who pass by.

6. Penhas Douradas and the hidden treasure: Those who pass by Penhas Douradas do not always realize that they are about 1.5km from one of the most fantastic buildings in Serra da Estrela. The Vale do Rossim dam is of unparalleled beauty and delights thousands of bathers every summer.

What should you know about the region?
